| Canada Youth Culture Show Raises $8K to Support Students |

The IMHO Canada Youth Committee held its first ever event and fundraiser this past January 23rd at the Armenian Youth Centre of Toronto. The event, “Breaking Barriers”, was an evening of live music and dance by talented youth. What is most impressive is that the show was all about youth: it was planned by youth, featured youth performers, and benefited youth in Sri Lanka. It was a terrific first effort that not only helped spread the word about IMHO, but also raised some much needed funds during this difficult time. Due to the recent escalation of war in the Northeast of Sri Lanka, which has displaced hundreds of thousands, a number of medical students from Jaffna have lost contact with their families. As such, they have no means of financial support at present. In total, 37 such individuals have been recently identified, and the IMHO Canada Youth Committee has decided to support them during their time of need. The donation is being facilitated by the local medical alumni association and is due to be sent shortly. IMHO is prepared to support these students for at least one year.
“Breaking Barriers” was an event aimed at raising awareness about the current situation in Sri Lanka, informing the public about IMHO’s efforts to help those in need, and raising funds for a special population – medical students at the University of Jaffna, Faculty of Medicine. About $8,000 was raised for this purpose, which is enough to support all 37 medical students for 3 months, including transportation, food, accommodation, and other expenses. In addition, the Jaffna Medical Faculty Overseas Alumni (JMFOA) in the United States is adding another $8,000 to this total, which brings our grand total to $16,000 going to these 37 students from Vanni who have all been affected by the IDP crisis. This amount can provide them with the financial aid needed for food, accommodation and additional expenses for 6 months. We hope that generous people will continue to support what we have started. Over 100 youth in the community volunteered their time and effort to help organize the event and provide performances. And roughly 350 people attended the event.
