IMHO held its 6th Semi-Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Baltimore, Maryland. The event featured presentations by several esteemed individuals representing 3 different nonprofit humanitarian organizations. We first heard from Evelyn Cherow, CEO and Founder of Global Partners United. Global Partners United is a social enterprise organization that creates alliances for innovative public-private partnerships committed to “brain gain”, systems strengthening, and capacity building via 21st century hybrid learning models, online learning tools, and telepractices. Ms. Cherow spoke of opportunities for using technology and web-based strategies to promote sustainable capacity building in the fields of health and education. You can find her presentation on our website here: http://www.theimho.org/publications/presentations/203-intro-gpu-brain-gain-presentation

We then heard from IMHO Treasurer, Dr. Rajam Theventhiran, who provided the audience with an update on all of IMHO’s efforts, including how IMHO has responded to the needs of the IDPs in Northern Sri Lanka following their displacement earlier this year. You can find her presentation here: http://www.theimho.org/publications/presentations/201-imho-semi-annual-efforts

Graziella Costanzo, EMERGENCY USAOur next speaker was Graziella Costanzo, President of EMERGENCY USA, an independent nonprofit organization established for the charitable purpose of raising awareness through education about a culture of peace and respect for human dignity, and raising funds and community support for medical care, rehabilitation and relief efforts for victims of wars, land mines, poverty and natural disasters. Its parent organization, EMERGENCY, is based in Milan, Italy. Ms. Costanzo showed a short video introduction to the organization, and then spoke to us about their efforts to improve healthcare for those in need around the world. You can view the video she showed on YouTube by using the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpMP2YdoGs

Our final speaker for the day was an anesthesiologist recently returned from working with Medecins Sans Frontiers in the Menik Farms IDP camp in Vavuniya, Sri Lanka. This was her fourth mission to Sri Lanka, although she has served on other missions, as well.

We are very grateful to the 23 pharmaceutical representatives who supported this event and put up their displays in the adjacent room. We are also grateful to the event organizers and volunteers who helped make this meeting a success. And finally, we are extremely grateful to all our speakers for sharing their insights, experiences, and knowledge with us.
