EffortsOne of the most basic and critically important needs of those in marginalized areas is that of proper nutrition. As such, IMHO is committed to supporting the basic nutritional needs of those that are malnourished, especially for women, children, and the elderly. Poor income-generating opportunities and high food prices have resulted in significant malnutrition among both children and adults throughout Sri Lanka. To assist pregnant women, IMHO works through local health authorities to supply free prenatal vitamins, milk powder, and nutritional support (including folic acid and iron) for underweight, pregnant women. Specifically, women with BMI (body mass index) below 18.5 and living below the poverty line are targeted. These efforts have helped contribution to the reduction of the rate of underweight and undernourished children, as well as the decreased maternal & child mortality rates, most especially within the Jaffna District. IMHO believes strongly in the importance of health education and so engages adolescent girls at the secondary school level in educational seminars, teaching the importance of proper nutrition, especially during pregnancy. Young and new mothers who benefit from IMHO’s nutritional programs also receive instruction and guidance on nutrition. Similar efforts have been supported on an ongoing basis in feeding at-risk children in schools, including special needs schools, and orphanages across Sri Lanka since our organization’s inception. Elders’ nutritional programs are another staple of the organization, as is responding to the nutritional needs of those who have been displaced.
