EffortsCardiac care outside of major cities is often poor and underdeveloped. The same is true for much of Sri Lanka, especially the north and east. For this reason, IMHO has donated important equipment and supplies, including an echo-cardiogram and portable echo-cardiogram machines, pacemakers and catheters, equipment for a High Dependency Unit at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, transvenous temporary pacemaker unit, and more. Funds were given to develop the cardiac catheterization lab unit building at the JTH and to provide other support for the unit. IMHO also brought much needed attention to the need for a cardiac catheterization lab in Northeast Sri Lanka, which opened in February 2010. The new complex was funded and constructed by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) under the UN Development Programme (UNDP), with early support and attention being drawn to this need in-part by IMHO. This building will soon house a state-of-the-art cath lab unit, the equipment for which is being donated by an outside aid agency. It also sets the foundation for starting a cardiothoracic unit at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital where open heart bypass surgeries may be performed in the future. This newly established Heart Treatment Complex will be essentially for directly serving the cardiac needs of 500,000 persons in the area and indirectly serving millions throughout the Northeast. Finally, IMHO arranged for and funded cardiac surgeries for children from low income families who could otherwise have not afforded such treatment. Video on Cardiac NeedsThis English-language video entitled "Hope in the Horizon" was produced in September 2008 and describes the need for a cardiac facility at Jaffna Teaching Hospital. IMHO brought much needed attention to the need for a cardiac catheterization lab in Jaffna, helping to bring the project to the attention of several other international non-governmental organizations. One such group has since come forward and agreed to fund the construction of this critically important facility.
